Eva 01 modeling

It's 5am and I'm sitting here working on my Eva. I haven't posted any 3D stuff that I do because I'm still a bit wet behind the ears at it. I thought I should post my progress on this newest project though, just to have a visual record.

Modeling spheres

I'm doing some modeling exercises right now as part of my continuing process of mastering PS. Here are some spheres. The first one shows the full light (diffuse color), half-light (transition), shadow (form shadow), and reflected light as clearly delineated regions in order to help me clearly see my topology. The next version is the same sphere only that the regions are now blended to create a more 3-dimensional feel.

Tonal study

This is a tonal study I did based off of a Resident Evil poster featuring the lovely Milla Jovovich, just a random google image search for faces. After desaturating the image I created a nine tone grayscale (not including pure white) and then used those tones for the initial blocking. Then I just putzed and putzed till I thought I should stop. Not a horrible end result, but I think I coulda taken more time to get her facial proportions right in the rough sketch, which I took all of 10 minutes to do.

Weekly Challenge_02

Well the weekly challenge theme this week was "A boy and his dog" after the Harlan Ellison story of the same name. We could interpret it as loosely as we liked. Unfortunately I didn't get very far at all, as you can see.

Still Life_orange

I just got back from seeing Satoshi Kon's 'Paprika'. What an amazing film. After a bit you forget your watching an animated movie. It's so overwhelming.

Here is another still life. An orange. Rendering an orange is difficult I discovered for two reasons. One is obvious, the texture. Even after you've modeled the form decently you have to do all the little "hatching" to make the surface read as an orange. Otherwise it just looks like a balloon. The second difficulty is the color. Orange is so powerful that it was hard for me to see the red-oranges in the shadows and the subtle pinks in the reflected light. A great challenge if you want to really force yourself to see.

Still Life_blue plate

I've started doing studies to improve my PS painting process. Right now I'm participating in a painting thread on conceptart.org. The whole point is observation and efficiency in execution. I did this little toy ceramic plate that was sitting on my desk. I will be doing more still lifes in the future.

Sewer Scene

This is from a photoshop painting I did last month. After I got finished with it, I thought it would be cool to make a scene out of it in Flash. So far, I've only roughed in the pacing.

Jun-Ichi Fujikawa

Hahaha. It appears that Jun-Ichi Fujikawa was working on the same theme as Scott and I were at the same time. Take a look at his site for the month of February 08. Man, that dude is bad.

Weekly Challenge_01

My good friend Scott and I have begun a weekly drawing challenge wherein one of us comes up with a theme for the week and we post the results on Sunday. The first one was my idea, an armoured warrior battling hordes, fairly cliche but it's about the process and the education. The research was lots of fun for me on this one. I now have a morgue chock full of different types of armour. This also got me back to painting in photoshop, where I'm still struggling to get the look I want to my painting style. So hopefully this all means that I will be contributing more regularly to this blog now, at least once a week. Unfortunately my family and I got really sick just as I started working on this project so I didn't get as far as I would've liked. Still, it's all about the process and the education.

Naruto

Ok, it's not really Naruto. I've just named it that. I did this while on vacation in Albuquerque. It began simply as a gesture exercise and then my wife's little cousin suggested I make him Naruto. It was a good suggestion because it made me color the thing, which makes this, coincidentally, the first real full color gesture animation I've done in Flash. Thanks Josh.

This is a little ditty I cooked up after reading about Ryo-Chimo animating someone kicking another person in the gut. Kinda looks rotoscoped huh? It ain't.
